*In The Eyes of Christmas*
By: Shannon Simko
The leaves have all fallen, a cool chill has filled the air, and Jack Frost has visited all the doors and windows, and there is only one definition for this pure beauty, winter is coming. That means Christmas is on its way and the madhouse of parents will soon fill all the stores on their scavenger hunt for the best present. Sometimes people get too caught up into the commercial scene of Christmas that they forget the true meaning behind the holiday.
The true meaning that relates back to the time where Christmas was about being with family and friends, getting ready to welcome in the New Year. The love and joy of being brought together with loved ones celebrating life and how special it is to have their company. Aprreciating the beautiful wonderland that surrounds us throught the holiday season, and eating an enormous Christmas dinner then the children hang their stockings and run off to bed knowing Santa wouldn't come if they were still awake. Waking early the next morning to see the cookies and milk have disappeared and have been replaced with a mountain of presents underneath the tree.
Instead Christmas is now known as the most hectic holiday. Local stores and malls are consumed by parents swarming like bees pushing and shoving until they get every last wish on their lists. Some even go to the extent of waiting for days in a line outside a store to be the first to get the New Nintendo Systems. See Christmas to most people now is very stressful and money quenching. Christmas just isn't Christmas unless you have presents, and in the eyes of parents the holidays just won't be good enough if they don't get their kids what they want, not realizing they already have everything they need if they just believed.
When you were little you believed in Santa and believed in the spirit of Christmas. So why not now? The light of excitement in each child's eyes around Christmas is priceless, and how they stare up at the Santa impostor at the mall with pure amazement trying to remember each and every detail on their list while being baffled at the same time that they are actually on Old Saint Nick's lap. Going outside on Christmas Eve throwing reindeer food on the ground, so they don't go hungry on their busy trip and then driving around looking at all the Christmas lights. Christmas really is a beautiful thing...just depends on how you look at it.
